Hunting Tree Dogs on Squirrel & Coon

Being a pup

Posted by Sunset Treed on January 27, 2010 at 5:03 PM

Well I been hunting Storm solo for last few days.  She is mostly just running around sniffing stuff and being a pup.  This is the point where a lot of folks will get discouraged.  She is just over 5 months old.  I saw a squirrel today, only about 25 feet from where we were.  It was about 10 feet off the ground when I saw it and I froze.  Storm kept hunting and was moving right towards it so I was getting real excited.  The squirrel jump over to a larger tree and started to climb right as Storm got up under it.  I was wanting her to see it, but she didn't, and even though she acted like she smelled it she never even checked the tree.  I waited awhile to see if she would get wind of it but she seemed more content to sniff around on the ground.  Oh well, it's all part of the process of training a tree dog.  The instinct is in there, she has treed like an old dog on hang-ups, I just have to be patient and wait for it to come out.
