Squirrel & Coon Hunting Supplies Equipment Tips

When I go to the woods there are several things that I always try to bring with me.  First thing is a GPS.  I have a Garmin Astro and don't know how I got by without it.  Second is at least 2 spare AA batteries for the Astro.  Third is a back up compass in case the Astro's gets out of whack and you need to check it.  Also helps to keep up with your general walking direction if you get in some real thick stuff and can't see any land marks to walk toward.  Just pick a direction on the compass and then use that to walk a straight line out until you can see good again.  A safety whistle, I train all my dogs to come to a whistle.  Makes calling them in much easier and if you need to signal for help it is hard to beat a good whistle.  All these items are must haves as far as I am concerned.

I like to carry a Swiss Army knife in my pocket.  During the Summer months I will carry Benadryl for snake bites.  I will also carry water purification tablets just in case I run out of water and have to fill my bottle with creek water.  Creek water won't kill you but it can make you awful sick!  Another good thing to have is something to stop bleeding (for you or the dogs), like the new EMT gels.

Coon hunting I always carry a spare walking light.  Something small with a long battery life in case you are out longer than expected.  A map, this is especially important at night because you can't see that far.  You can use streams and hill contours to help figure out where you are.  This combined with a compass and you should be able to at least find a road.  I like a flasher on my dog at night.  Helps to keep up with them and it might keep them from getting hit by a car if they cross a road.

Welcome!
